Burlington Free Press: Secretary of State candidates spar campaign disclosures

By Nancy Remsen

Jason Gibbs, Republican candidate for secretary of state, took a step Thursday to show how easy and inexpensive it could be to make information about campaigns more accessible and usable to the public.

He posted on his website a spreadsheet listing all the contributions made to his campaign as of Wednesday, then challenged Jim Condos, his Democratic opponent, to post similar information.

Under state law, candidates report contributions and expenditures once a month. The most recent reports were filed Aug. 17, and the next are due Sept. 15. Election officials post the data online within days of receiving paper copies.

Condos upped the ante after receiving Gibbs’ e-mail challenge. Condos said he would post not only an up-to-date list of his campaign contributors, but also an accounting of his campaign’s expenditures. “I will get it up as quickly as I can,” he said.
